Configure WiFi as an Access Point to enable Internet access for WiFi Clients

In this tutorial, we’ll look at how to configure WiFi as an access point so that WiFi clients can access the Internet via the gateway’s LTE/4G network.

We assume that you have:

  • an LTE/4G connection that is up and running
  • the Ping via the [Network] > [Diagnostics] web page therefore works
  • the rest of the network configuration is set to factory defaults

Set Up WiFi as an Access Point (AP)

  • Go to Network > Wireless
  • Click Edit on your WiFi interface
  • Set Mode to Access Point
  • Configure SSID (e.g., acegtw4g)
  • Under Network, select lan
  • Set No Encryption for our tests
    • Later, Set Encryption (e.g., WPA2-PSK) and define a strong passphrase
  • Save & Apply

Configure the LAN for Proper Routing

  • Go to Network > Interfaces > LAN
  • Set:
    • Protocol: Static IP (Already by default)
    • IP Address: e.g., 192.168.8.1 (Already by default)
    • DHCP Server: Enabled
  • Restart the LAN interface

Test the Connection

  • Connect a WiFi client (Smartphone, PC,..) to acegtw4G WiFi Access Point
  • Check internet access
